Marchese Partners Adelaide was recently invited to participate in a design competition to design the new gateway building for Monarto Zoo, Adelaide’s safari zoo park. Our design vision for the safari gateway building is derived from the ecological importance of the waterhole in the African savannah.
The concept utilises the natural fall and ridge line of the roof, to create a sheltered outdoor space; the social centre of Monarto. A large iconic roof above the simple limestone ridge buildings, an abstraction of a large flock of birds, providing shelter and shade to the outdoor dining areas to the north and south. The buildings’ openness evokes a sense of space appropriate to the wide expanses of an open range zoo and the local Mallee context, where the long views are uninterrupted to maximize the sense of spaciousness of Manarto.
